Nimbl™ Upper Body Pneumatic Compression Device FAQs
How do Nimbl™ upper body pneumatic compression devices work?
Nimbl is a small and lightweight pneumatic compression device (PCD) for the upper body, used to treat lymphedema and similar conditions that affect the lymphatic system. This pneumatic compression pump for the arms delivers sequential pressure, creating a gentle squeezing action that redirects fluid from the swollen region to healthy, functioning areas of the body. As a result, patients with lymphedema in their arms or hands can use Nimbl to promote lymphatic circulation and relieve swelling, pain, discomfort, and similar symptoms to regain their quality of life.
Who should use a pneumatic compression device for the upper body?
Nimbl pneumatic compression pumps for upper extremities are designed to treat a range of lymphatic disorders that affect the arms or hands, including:
- Chronic edema: Patients with persistent swelling in their arms or hands, whether caused by cancer, injury, poor circulation, or other factors, can use Nimbl to guide fluid away from this region, reducing swelling and preventing fluid accumulation.
- Lymphedema: Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive condition that can be inherited or caused by a disruption to the lymphatic system, such as cancer or its treatment, direct trauma or injury, blood clots, venous insufficiency, or obesity, among other factors. As a result, fluid can build up in the body’s tissues, causing swelling, pain, and other symptoms. Pneumatic compression devices are designed to mimic the natural movement of lymphatic fluid through sequential pressure to promote lymphatic drainage.
- Wound healing: Lymphedema and similar lymphatic disorders can impair lymphatic circulation, leading to chronic wounds, such as venous ulcers. Although much more common in the legs, venous ulcers can increase the risk of infection, including cellulitis, which can further exacerbate lymphedema symptoms. Nimbl pneumatic compression devices for hands and arms improve the flow of fluid to create a healthier environment for wound healing, reducing the risk of infection.
Talk to your doctor about a pneumatic compression device for the upper extremities if you’re experiencing symptoms like chronic swelling, pain, reduced range of motion, and other signs of lymphedema.

How does a pneumatic compression device for the arms fit into a lymphedema treatment plan?
Patients living with lymphedema will often undergo complete decongestive therapy (CDT). CDT is a multimodal treatment plan that consists of two phases, with Phase I involving intensive in-clinic treatment, where patients work with a lymphedema therapist to receive lymphatic drainage, exercises, compression therapy, and skin care. Phase II of CDT is the maintenance phase. Here, patients will continue to manage their lymphedema symptoms at home and get fitted for compression garments for lymphedema, care for their skin, follow an exercise plan, and use pneumatic compression devices. PCDs, such as Nimbl, direct fluid away from the affected upper extremities to reduce pain and swelling in the arms.
How often should you use a pneumatic compression device for the upper body?
Nimbl is designed to be worn for 60 minutes daily. However, your doctor or lymphedema therapist may recommend a different schedule based on your individual needs. Patients love Nimbl’s lightweight, compact design, which allows them to access compression therapy, whether at home or on the road.
